If you would like to sip along at home as distinguished sommelier Robin Pohlman guides us through a tasting of two of Austria’s most unique wines, visit your local wine store and ask for a Salomon Undhof 2019 Gruner Veltliner ‘Wieden” and an Arndorfer 2017 Neuburger Strasser. If your local store does not carry these, not to worry. Simply ask the wine clerk to recommend similar white wines from Austria and follow along with Robin’s expert tasting tips.
For those of you within delivery range of Cafe Katja, the Lower East side restaurant of Emmy-Award winning Chef Erwin Schrottner, you can order the wonderful dish that he will be showcasing that evening, the jeagerschnitzel. If you are not within delivery range or if you prefer, here are some suggested food pairings to have have on hand:
Mushroom Pesto on Toasted Sourdough
Depending on your local market, you might find a ready-made jar of mushroom pesto. If not, feel free to sub basil pesto or any non-spicy pesto made with nuts and olive oil. Toast a thick slice of sourdough bread under the broiler, and smear with a generous spoonful of pesto. Top with fresh thyme if you have it!
Mild and Nutty Hard Cheese with Apricot Jam
If you have a good cheese counter nearby, ask for a mild and nutty hard cheese. Pick up a handful of salted pecans and a jar of apricot jam as a garnish (peach jam will also work, or even just a good floral honey).
We look forward to celebrating 75 years of sight restoration with you!
