This event will focus on how eye banks can effectively work with industry without compromising their non-profit status to create new and innovative treatments for blinding eye diseases through cellular therapies. Arthur Caplan, PhD
Dr. Caplan is currently the Drs. William F and Virginia Connolly Mitty Professor and founding head of the Division of Medical Ethics at NYU School of Medicine in New York City.

Prior to coming to NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Caplan was the Sidney D. Caplan Professor of Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, where he created the Center for Bioethics and the Department of Medical Ethics. Caplan has also taught at the University of Minnesota, where he founded the Center for Biomedical Ethics, the University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University. He received his PhD from Columbia University.

 Dr. Caplan is the author or editor of thirty-five books and over 725 papers in peer reviewed journals. His most recent books are The Ethics of Sport, (Oxford University Press, 2016 with Brendan Parent) and Vaccination Ethics and Policy, (MIT Press, 2017 with Jason Schwartz).

Jana D’Amato Tóthová, PhD
Dr. D’Amato Tóthová was born in former Czechoslovakia. In 2002, she obtained the MSc diploma in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg in France. In 2006, she obtained a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology and Pathology at Università Degli Studi Di Padova, Italy. Her professional experiences include Tissue Bank Technician at Veneto Tissue Bank in Treviso, Project manager in a Nanotechnology company, MBN Nanomaterialia. She is currently the R&D manager at Alchimia, an Italian manufacturing company that operates in the field of eye surgery, cornea and tissue transplantation. Dr. D’Amato Tothova has built strong experience in medical device development, standardization and validations. She coordinates scientific collaborations worldwide that aim at development of innovative medical devices and scientific publications. She is also an expert for International Organization for Standardization in Technical committee for Ophthalmic optics and instruments.


Andy Davis, MPA
As BoardSource’s associate vice president of member education and outreach, Andy Davis leads a team that is responsible for developing all of BoardSource’s educational resources, including member education content and programming, training programs, publications, and educational programming at the BoardSource Leadership Forum. Andy also oversees BoardSource’s external marketing and outreach efforts. He is a regular speaker and presenter on a wide range of board leadership topics and issues and played a lead role in the development of BoardSource’s Measuring Fundraising Effectiveness Framework. He holds a MPA with a concentration in nonprofit management from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Robert Jacob, PhD
Dr. Jacob is currently Commercial Director at Leipzig University Hospital and brings with him extensive experience in the field of university medicine from his previous work. Before taking over corporate controlling in Germany's largest university hospital, he was head of the faculty controlling and commercial director of the medical faculty of the Charité in Berlin. Before that, the Dresden native worked for several years as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company in Germany and abroad. He wrote his dissertation in the field of economic and social psychology at the University of Cologne.

Seth Levy, JD
Seth focuses his practice on intellectual property protection, licensing, strategy, and disputes, as well as research transactions and operations, particularly in life sciences and health care. He handles a range of technology and clinical research matters, and advises technology transfer programs at academic and health care institutions. Seth also acts as outside general counsel to technology-driven companies. He is co-chair of the firm’s Life Sciences practice. He obtained his JD from The University of Southern California Law School

Eckhard Nagel, MD, PhD
Dr. Nagel serves as Executive Director of the Institute of Medical Management and Health Sciences (IMG) at the University of Bayreuth and as CEO of the Children Hospital Ederhof, Lienz, Osttirol. Previously, he was founding member of the German Ethics Council and 2010 - 2015 Chief Executive and Medical Director of the University Hospital Essen. As a physician and philosopher, Eckhard Nagel has always been interested in superior structures of healthcare beyond his practical work as transplant surgeon. The basis of both, strategic and medical decisions is an important field of interest. Gilles Thuret
Gilles Thuret, MD, PhD, IUF
Dr. Thuret is an Ophthalmology surgeon at the University Hospital of St-Etienne, Professor of Ophthalmology, and co-founder, with Pr. Philippe Gain, of the “Biology, imaging and engineering of Corneal Grafts” University Laboratory. The laboratory is focused on how to improve multiple aspects of graft quality controls and corneal survival during storage, and on endothelial bioengineering as an alternative to endothelial keratoplasty. He is currently the President of the Clinical Research and Innovation Office at the University Hospital.

Dr. Thuret was admitted in 2012 (as a junior member, for 5 years) in the prestigious “Institut Universitaire de France” that recognizes and encourages the most promising career in all French academic fields


Michelle Rhee
Michelle Rhee, MD
Dr. Rhee is a cornea and cataract surgeon, with special interests in contact lens safety and eye banking. She is an associate clinical professor of ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the medical director of the Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration in New York, and immediate past president of the Eye and Contact Lens Association. She completed her residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, followed by cornea fellowship at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Dr. Rhee is co-chair of the Accreditation Board, and served as scientific program chair for the Eye Bank Association of America. In addition to authoring articles, she has lectured nationally and internationally on contact lens safety, eye banking, and anterior segment surgery.

Stefano Ferrari
Stefano Ferrari, PhD
Dr. Ferrari is the Head of the Research Centre of the Veneto Eye Bank Foundation (FBOV). He is the current Chair of the EEBA Special Interest Group in “Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products”. He is involved in different projects aimed at developing new therapeutic strategies/protocols to implement the pipeline of ATMPs to be used in clinical trials (both for cornea and retina-related disorders), and new devices to be used by eye banks to pre-load DMEK grafts.

Since 2012, he serves as Quality Control Manager for the FBOV Cell Factory, which has produced more than 200 clinical-grade limbal stem cell grafts, which were transplanted on patients with limbal stem cell deficiency.
